Leigh is the nearest town to Cape Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve, New Zealand’s first marine reserve at Goat Island, famous as the best place to see marine life in abundance, and also the location for the University of Auckland’s Marine Laboratory. Having been protected since 1975, this marine reserve has big snapper, blue maomao and many other species of fish close to shore. Fishing is strictly prohibited.
